Catalina Foothills enrollment and funding increase

The Catalina Foothills School District’s gloomy budget outlook for the 2009-10 school year brightened a bit this week with news of improved funding and enrollment figures, as well as strong early results from a grass-roots fundraising campaign.

A budget update posted Thursday on the district’s Web site says officials expect to recall five of the 15 certified teaching positions the governing board voted to eliminate April 14.

Those positions were able to be restored because the district got word it would receive $220,000 more in special-education funding than it had expected, Superintendent Mary Kamerzell wrote.

Kamerzell also said the district has surpassed its 2009-10 enrollment goal and will be able to adjust some of its proposed class-size scenarios. The district has 4,854 students enrolled for next year, 22 more than in the 2007-08 school year.

Meanwhile, the non-profit Catalina Foothills School District Foundation had raised $65,000 in donations as of Friday for its “30/60 Challenge,” foundation President Mark Kipphut said.

The fundraising campaign was launched two weeks ago with the goal of preserving as many as 30 teaching positions in 60 days by asking each district family to donate $500.

Kipphut said the effort also was expected to benefit from the proceeds of a golf tournament held Friday, as well as what he described as “a couple of inbound large checks” that could bump the collection to more than $80,000.

“I’m sort of hopeful by the end of today we’ll have two teacher positions fully funded,” Kipphut said Friday.

Any positions funded through the 30/60 Challenge would be independent of the 5.6 full-time-equivalent positions the foundation annually funds through a $250,000 endowment to the school district, Kipphut said.

Grassroots effort to save teachers

Looming education cuts could force teachers out of their classrooms. But schools in the Foothills are taking action to raise funds themselves.

Catalina Foothills prides itself on small class size, a 25 to one student to teacher ratio.

“The personal attention the teachers give to these kids is just fabulous,” says parent Mimi Cross.

But take away 2.7 million in state funding, 30 teachers could get pink slips next school year. That’s not sitting well with parents.

“We did move here 12 years ago to for this school district and my husband commutes one hour twenty minutes each day so that my children can be in this district,” says Michelle Capin.

Not willing to stand by and watch 30 teachers lose their jobs, The Catalina Foothills School District Foundation launched “The 30/60 Challenge” to save 30 teaching jobs in 60 days.

“So we’ve gone out to each district family, asked them to donate and raise $500 and pull money to back-fill 30 positions,” says Mark Kipphut, with the Catalina Foothills District Foundation.

The goal is to raise $1.3 million by June 15th.

Hoping to spread the word like a virus, the campaign’s gone viral. Families can visit www.3060challenge.com or donate on Facebook,
http://apps.facebook.com/causes/265190/23609740

“Because of the power of the internet, we’ve had donations come from across the country from Maine and New Jersey,” says Kipphut.

“You’ve really got to take the bull by the horns yourself and do what you can do - it’s your kids,” adds Kross.

So far 100 families have donated, 100 others are promising their support.

Donations sought for Foothills schools
Each family is asked for $500 to preserve 30 teaching jobs
By Lourdes Medrano

A grass-roots campaign to save teaching jobs is taking shape in the Foothills as an answer to deep state budget cuts in schools.

The Catalina Foothills School District Foundation launched its “30/60 Challenge” this week. The 60-day campaign aims to preserve the positions of 30 teachers by asking every district family to chip in $500, said Mark Kipphut, foundation president.

“Our concern is that the cuts potentially targeting teaching positions will jeopardize the Catalina Foothills Unified School District’s history of superior student academic achievement,” Kipphut said in an e-mail to district residents.

Kris Tvedt, an engineer who has three children in the district, gladly donated $500 to the fledgling campaign.

“I truly believe in public education,” he said. “I want my children educated in a full environment where there’s all sorts of challenges.”

To spur more people into quick action, the non-profit foundation is spreading its message through a Web site — www.3060challenge.com — and the Facebook online social network. District residents and others can donate money online, download a grass-roots kit and learn about the schools’ budget crisis. Fundraising events also are in the works.

“Our parents and other community members aren’t willing to watch our important academic programs waste away due to the starvation diet the state has put us on over time,” district Superintendent Mary Kamerzell wrote in an e-mail to the Star.

Thirty teaching positions would be lost in the next academic year under a worst-case funding scenario, she said. So far, 15 district teachers and counselors have been notified they won’t have jobs in the fall. All were told in early April that they could be rehired later.

Although the campaign primarily targets families with school-age children, Kipphut said the foundation has received about $25,000 in tax-deductible contributions from a mix of donors. The goal is to collect $1.3 million for the teaching positions.

“Teachers are the heart and soul of our district,” Kipphut said.

The foundation is used to raising money to support the district, albeit in smaller amounts.

The group already is funding six other teaching positions next year with $250,000, he said.

“We’re stretching ourselves, but we have to,” Kipphut said. “This is about the kids.”

Tucson Foundation Launches Grassroots Fundraising Campaign to
Keep Foothills Area Teachers in Classrooms

(Tucson, Arizona) — Faced with unacceptable cuts in state funding for public education that could jeopardize the future of foothills students, the Catalina Foothills School District Foundations has launched a 60-day grassroots fundraising drive to offset the cuts proposed by state lawmakers. The campaign asks foothills families and public education advocates to take the “30/60 Challenge,” which seeks to raise the requisite funds, over 60 days, to retain the 30 teaching positions now at risk under current budget projections.

“The 30/60 Challenge inspires the community to come together and preserve our decade-long record of excellence,” said Mark Kipphut, President of the CFSD Foundation. “Our efforts focus on investing in proven results,” he continued, “and instead of cutting our funding, legislators should be showcasing District 16 as the model for successful public education.”

Kipphut states that the Foothills community cares about their children and their schools, and that this campaign is empowering them to take positive action. “The 30/60 Challenge is designed to give parents and supporters the tools to engage their family, friends, and neighbors in this important effort, enabling our community to take a stand for our kids, and for the continued tradition of excellence in the Catalina Foothills School District.”

Families are requested to visit the 30/60 Challenge Web site (www.3060challenge.com) to download the campaign’s grassroots kit. This Web site is designed to help individuals get organized, and includes the following items:

  • Details about the proposed budget cuts
  • Details about what is at risk
  • A fact sheet to help answer questions
  • Campaign graphics that can be downloaded and personalized

In addition, to maximize the campaign’s potential among vast social networks, the Foundation has developed a 30/60 challenge “cause page” on Facebook.
